What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is the treatment of psychological ("mental") illnesses with the help of scientifically recognized procedures, methods, and techniques. Mental illnesses can severely affect experience, behavior, and mental and physical well-being, and can be accompanied by suffering, anxiety, insecurity, and restrictions on the quality of life. Psychotherapy is advisable when psychological problems can no longer be solved alone or with the help of family or friends, and symptoms of illness and the everyday demands of life can no longer be coped with.

Before starting psychotherapy, a clarification by a doctor is necessary, as physical causes may be responsible or partly responsible for the mental illness.

All psychotherapeutic treatments have in common that they take place through personal conversation, which can be supplemented by special methods and techniques (e.g., free communication of thoughts and ideas, concrete tasks to cope with e.g., fears, or playful action in the therapy of children).

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy sees symptoms of illness as a consequence of current conflicts in relationships or of unresolved relationship experiences and conflicts from earlier phases of life. These conflicts and experiences can determine later life and result in mental illness. Treatment aims to identify the underlying unconscious motives and conflicts as a cause of the current symptoms and to deal with them. Patients are supported in psychotherapy to achieve changes in their experience and behavior by gaining insight into the connections and causes of their current symptoms. For the concept of psychodynamic psychotherapy to be feasible, a great deal of trust and openness is necessary. The method of free association is used. The psychotherapist has an appreciative and non-judgmental attitude. Anything that comes to mind is welcome in the session.
